The most common reason Dr. Wainer recommends knee joint replacement
for his patients is to relieve severe arthritis pain. Dr. Wainer may
recommend knee joint replacement if you have:
•
Symptoms of knee arthritis, including knee pain that keeps you up at
night or prevents you from doing daily activities
•
Knee pain that continues despite other treatments
The goal of total knee replacement surgery (also called "arthroplasty") is to
decrease pain and restore function. For some patients, however, the
osteoarthritis is limited to just one part of the knee. These patients may be
candidates for a partial knee replacement (also called unicompartmental
knee replacement). Dr. Wainer is one of the few surgeons in the Piedmont
Triad area performing Oxford® Partial Knee Replacement surgery.
In a partial knee replacement, Dr. Wainer only replaces the damaged
compartment of the knee with man-made materials. The healthy cartilage
and bone in the rest of the knee is left alone. For patients that qualify for
partial knee replacement, there are several advantages over total knee
replacement surgery. These include:
•
A quicker recovery
•
Less pain after surgery
•
Less blood loss
Also, because the healthy parts of the knee remain intact, patients often
report that the partial knee replacement feels more "natural" than a total
knee replacement. A partial knee may also have better range of motion
and bend better.
Patients should keep in mind that with a partial knee replacement it is
possible that future surgeries would be necessary should the healthy part of
the knee later develop osteoarthritis. After examining your knee and
studying your individual case, Dr. Wainer can let you know if you are a
potential candidate for an Oxford® Partial Knee Replacement.
